Health insurance provides an added level of protection over and above our public health system

In New Zealand, we’re fortunate to have access to a high level of care through the public health service, but it is currently under strain. Relying on the public health system alone can mean longer wait times for access to specialists and surgeries, and less choice in the treatments available.
Health insurance can provide faster access to better treatments, giving you and your family peace of mind. Most importantly, it can give you access to specialist drug treatments not subsidised by the government's "Pharmac".

What types of cover can you get from health insurance?

Not all health insurance policies are the same. Policies can often be tailored to suit your specific health and financial circumstances, with additional benefits available to cover nearly all eventualities. For example, additional specialist and diagnostic cover is a popular extra, as costs can quickly add up.
Health insurance can cover things like:
  • advanced cancer treatments and therapeutic drugs
  • access to private specialists and surgery
  • outpatient treatment
  • travel and accommodation costs
  • pre and post surgical care and related costs
  • a range of diagnostic treatments
Health insurance providers are also constantly rolling out new initiatives, with several providers now offering access to online GP consultations. Your Insure Otago insurance advisor can give honest, independent insurance advice and explain all the various options available.

How does health insurance work?

Health insurance works by spreading the individual risk of a policyholder across a wide group of people. You pay your weekly, fortnightly, or monthly premiums, and these create a pool of money that is then used to pay out claims when you get sick. Depending on your policy and specific treatment you’ve received, you may need to part-pay for treatment, with the insurer paying the rest, or you may need to pay in full and then claim back a reimbursement from your insurer.

Who can get health insurance?

Almost anyone can get health insurance, with even those with pre-existing conditions may sometimes have them covered, or excluded while still allowing access to the other benefits of the policy. Health insurance can also be obtained for just you as an individual, or also for your partner and any children you have.
