Secure your future with Total Permanent Disablement insurance

  • Provides a non-taxable lump sum payment in the event you can no longer work due to injury or illness
  • Enables you to make modifications to your home or pay for in-home support
  • Depending on the policy, it can provide partial payments for lesser injuries or illnesses that limit your capacity to work
Insure Otago will discuss your individual financial situation and help you understand whether Total Permanent Disablement insurance is right for you

What is Total Permanent Disablement insurance?

Total Permanent Disablement (TPD) insurance goes by a range of names, such as complete disablement insurance, but in essence, they all provide a single lump sum cash payment in the event that, through illness or injury, you become totally and permanently disabled in a way that means you cannot return to work.
Some policies provide additional benefits too, such as specific payments alongside your main cash payment in order to modify your home and vehicle for your new life. Many will also pay out a portion of your cover if your injury or illness is only partial, but limits your ability to work.

What benefits does Total Permanent Disablement insurance provide?

Along with the lump sum cash payment, these policies can also provide a range of other benefits depending on which policy and provider you choose.
There are partial permanent disability payments, where you receive a portion of the overall lump sum based on the impact of your injury or illness. They can provide payments for accessing financial and legal advice, as well as counselling services as you adjust to your new life. Some also offer reimbursement for alterations required to your home and vehicle.

How does Total Permanent Disablement insurance work with ACC?

While ACC covers many accident-related injuries, it doesn’t cover everything. Total Permanent Disablement (TPD) insurance doesn’t compromise any ACC cover you may receive; instead it complements it. Even if you get cover from ACC, your TPD insurance will still pay out. It provides an additional financial safety net in the event that you're not able to work again due to injury or illness.
It's also important to note that ACC doesn't cover not being able to work due to illness, meaning TPD insurance provides cover where ACC does not.
